How long have you been a member of ICD? How long have you served in a chair capacity of ICD?
Since 1980. Held all offices until elected head for 1990.
What aspects of international communication interest you the most?
Popular media and news media cross-border flows; also E. Asian media.
What are your current research projects and pursuits?
Writing a book about the globalization of Japanese cartoons (books and animation) for Peter Lang Publishers.
What five trends do you see occurring in international communication scholarship today?
End of cultural imperialism as a valid theory; rise of glocalization/ hybridization; decreased news from overseas in U.S. Media; increased activity by and with overseas colleagues (due to 'net); rise of Japanese popular culture worldwide.
Any other comments you would like to add?
The ICD open paper competition was named for Bob Stevenson, who died in 2006 and was my PhD advisor at UNC-Chapel Hill. I am honored to be in his office, Carroll 383, as a visiting prof- something I never dreamed would happen.
