How long have you been a member of ICD? How long have you served in a chair capacity of ICD?
I joined ICD in 2004 and became the Teaching Standards Chair the following year. I have been moving up the ladder ever since! I was the Markham Competition Chair last year and am the Bob Stevenson Research chair this year.
What aspects of international communication interest you the most?
I am a travel journalism and tourism/public relations researcher, so the international travel industry is what brought me to ICD. I am also a huge advocate of study abroad experiences for students. I think cross cultural study of any kind makes students better people and better employees.
What are your current research projects and pursuits?
I am currently looking at how international experience, whether that is working or studying abroad, affects a mass communication student's employability after college. Also, I just completed an encyclopedia entry on women in the Italian Resistance. I was fascinated with the messages and printed material women helped move through Italy during World War II, so I am doing some historical research on those messages and printed pieces.
What international communication resources do you use that you would like to share with ICD members?
Because of my interest in public relations and tourism, I am a big fan of the Sage publications and website. I also check out PR organizations in other countries like FERPI in Italy or CIPR in the UK to identify issues, interests, conferences and resources from around the world.
What five trends do you see occurring in international communication scholarship today?
From my own perspective, I think a huge international topic for the industry and academia is the ethics of public relations across cultures. Also, diversity and economic impact of public relations around the world are popular topics. And I don't know if I would call it a trend, but the EUPRERA
2008 Conference is looking for papers regarding the professional's relationship with strategic individuals in order to achieve PR objectives.
Of course new media's influence on international communication is a growing research trend. As always, we see many papers regarding American media's coverage of international events.
In the ICD paper competition we see studies about communication systems in different countries and that fits within ICD's scope, but we are interested in seeing more cross cultural studies and comparisons of practices between different countries and their media systems.
Any other comments you would like to add?
I really enjoy being in the international communication division, because of the huge opportunity to get to know such a diverse group of people. The perspectives of the research and the collegiality of the division meetings are so rewarding!
Participating in ICD has increased my involvement in AEJ period. There is such a sense of purpose and "organizational belonging" when you become a part of a division.
